Mistweaver 101: UI & WeakAuras

January 7, 2014

ui and auras

Today we will discuss setting up a UI for a Mistweaver Monk. Obviously, UI choices can be very subjective so what works for me may not be ideal for you. Overall I have found that playing a Mistweaver, particularly if you intend to do much Fistweaving, requires a slightly more complicated setup than most other healing specs.  Your UI must be able to function for both healing and DPSing purposes, and this can make for a lot of keybinds and/or mousebinds.

My UI

My UI

I use Shadowed Unit Frames to manage my unit frames, as seen in the player and target portraits above. Shadowed Unit Frames is more or less ready to go out of the box, and I will not discuss it in this post as it is not particular to my Mistweaver setup. The other addons you can see in this image are Vex Power, for managing Mana and Chi, and WeakAuras for tracking cooldowns.

Chi & Mana Management

As you can probably imagine from the Chi & Mana post, it is pretty darn important for you to know the status of your Mana and Chi at all times.  Your default UI will of course show this, but I prefer something that calls it to my attention in a particularly obvious way.  The add-on that I use for Mana and Chi tracking is Vex Power.  It’s very simple to set up and isn’t especially flashy, but it makes it extremely easy for me to see exactly how much Mana and Chi I have at any point during a fight. I change very little from the defaults, except to reposition/recolor the bars, and change Mana to display as both a percentage and the exact amount remaining:

Vex Power - The blue bar is my Mana and the green squares are my Chi.

Vex Power – The blue bar is my Mana and the green squares are my Chi.

WeakAuras

The appearance of these WeakAuras is heavily based upon Sunnier’s Brewmaster auras, which you should absolutely pick up if you are planning on doing any tanking with your Monk.  To use any of my auras, you will need to download the addon, enable it, and then log in to WoW and type /wa to bring up the WeakAuras interface.  To import an aura, copy the string from the boxes below.  Then click New, Import, and paste the string into the text box in-game.

In addition to using Vex Power to track Mana and Chi, I also use a WeakAura to keep track of my stacks of Mana Tea. This aura will show a grey icon when I have no stacks, and will then display a full-color icon anytime I have 1 or more stacks. If I have at least 2 stacks and I am at 85% Mana or less, the aura will show a gold glow around it to suggest that this would be a good time to use Mana Tea. (The aura requires at least 2 stacks to glow just in case you are using the Glyph of Mana Tea, which is generally something we would not do.)

Defensive & Other Cooldowns

The other cooldowns section contains:

other cds

  1. Diffuse Magic / Dampen Harm
  2. Fortifying Brew
  3. Zen Meditation
  4. Tiger’s Lust (if selected)
  5. Xuen (if selected)

These cooldowns will display in the same way as the healing cooldowns, with one small difference. If the cooldown has a duration (such as Fortifying Brew lasting 20 seconds), when the ability is used a bar will display filling DOWN to show the time remaining on the buff. Once the buff expires, the normal bar will display and fill UP to show the time until the cooldown can be used again.

Fortifying Brew available, in use, and on cooldown.

Fortifying Brew available, in use, and on cooldown.

Tiger’s Lust and Xuen will only display if their talents are active. As with your Tier 30 talents, either Diffuse Magic or Dampen Harm will activate depending upon which talent you have chosen. When Dampen Harm is active, the aura will display both the time remaining on the buff as well as the stacks remaining.

dampen harm aura

Dampen Harm available, in use, and on cooldown.

VuhDo Raid Frames

Because Mistweaver healing, particularly Fistweaving, requires many spells and keybinds, I especially recommend using a healing addon such as VuhDo. (Frankly, I highly recommend using a healing addon for any healing you’re doing, as it will greatly improve your reaction time and is generally considered a requirement in many raiding environments.) VuhDo does require a decent amount of setup after downloading it to make it work best for you and look how you want. There are plenty of video and text guides available if you need assistance with figuring out the basics of customizing VuhDo, so I will not cover it here. Adding commonly used healing spells to VuhDo will free up room on your bar space to add in DPS abilities and other personal cooldowns.

I have complied a very short video so that you can see these addons in action during a raid encounter:

Ohhh that’s a great idea for turning bars blue if the person has a dispellable debuff – I’ve got my Grid to show a blue square on the right side of the unitframe at the moment but it’s not exactly obvious.

Vex Power looks pretty handy too – the way you have it set up is similar to how I’ve got my warlock’s Burning Embers displayed using WeakAuras, and I was thinking of doing something similar with my monk, but WA is a bit of a hassle to set up for some things (I had to go looking on forums for a good BE aura to import, and it’s complex enough that I’d never had figured it out myself).

    • January 7, 2014 3:27 pm

I’m not a big fan of using WA for combo points simply because you have to set up auras for every single class. If you’re an altoholic like I am, Vex Power is great because it works for pretty much every type of combo point system in the game, including things like Burning Embers and Shadow Orbs.

Changing bar color based on debuff type (blue = magic, green = poison, etc.) is an out-of-the-box option for VuhDo and Healbot.

    • January 7, 2014 3:52 pm

I’ll have to give Vex Power a shot then, it definitely seems useful!

Didn’t know that about VuhDo and Healbot, never used them. Might have to set my bars to white/grey by default then, as it’s more of a ‘neutral’ than green ones, plus ‘green for poison’ is more obviously different to ‘green for healthy’ :D

    So many questions to ask…

First off, thank you for finally posting this. I have been waiting to install WA.
Second, I followed your instructions and was able to successfully copy/paste/add all of them (hurray).

What addons/UI compilation do you use to get your layout?
Looks like I see Recount, DBM, plus the ones you mentioned.
What does your layout look like for larger raid sizes?

I currently use a mostly default UI with mouseover macros. I have NO major Healer addons installed; I do use Renewing Mist Tracker.

For parties, I just use Raid-style Party Frames. (At L67, I have not done any raids.)

I am always interested in trying out new layouts. I’ve dabbled with ElvUI, but just cannot get into the feel of it. Your suggestions are most welcome.

    Regards

Personally I don’t really care for ElvUI either – not for any technical reason, I simply don’t like its aesthetic. I did want something that could be made to look like it all went together, though, which meant that I ended up building something from the ground up.

The addons I am currently using (aside from those already discussed in the post) are:
kgPanels – Creates the transparent grey containers at the bottom of the screen that I place my buttons, VuhDo, and chat window into. This addon serves no functional purpose except to create those containers so that I can group things as I want.
Skada – I greatly prefer this to Recount for damage/healing meters. The counts appear to be more accurate and also supply more information than Recount does.
Dominos – Allows me to customize my action bars so that I can rearrange my buttons.
Deadly Boss Mods – For raid encounter timers and warnings.
Tidy Plates – For enemy and friendly nameplates. It can also show debuffs on enemy nameplates.
SexyMap – Allows me to customize and reposition the mini map.
Chatter – Allows me to customize the chat box.

Here is a picture of how my VuhDo looks in a 25m raid. My VuhDo is set up to automatically resize the boxes as soon as I have more than 10 people in my group. As you can see, this means that the boxes now fill the entire compartment at the bottom of my screen rather than just the top half, as they do when they are set up for 10m.

Speaking of raid frames, I noticed you don’t have any kind of numerical display of health on them. Ever since Wrath I’ve had my Grid set to show (on the second line, below name) the character’s health deficit, ostensibly so I could know what kind of heal to use. Thinking about it now, though, I can’t actually recall a time I’ve actually looked at this number, let alone used it to determine which spell I should cast – rather I use the visual size of the deficit to judge.

So do you think there’s any benefit to having a numerical deficit display? Should I maybe train myself to look at it more closely? Right now the only time I look at that number is when it shows stacks of Mark of Arrogance (or other debuff that affects lots of people but must be prioritised).

    • January 8, 2014 8:31 am

So I think this is really a matter of personal preference. I really don’t care how much total health a person has, just how much health they are currently missing. It’s probably hard to see in the video, but my VuhDo does display a numerical value for missing health, but only when someone actually is at less than 100% health, obviously. Even that is probably not really necessary for me at this point. Once you get used to healing with VuhDo, you kind of “just know” approximately how much health someone is missing based upon how much green is missing from the bar. That takes a while to get used to, of course, and so it would probably be helpful to have some numerical indication in the meantime.

    • January 8, 2014 12:18 pm

“you kind of “just know” approximately how much health someone is missing”

Yeah that’s the thing I guess. Especially with my disc priest, I can kinda tell what someone’s max health is by the size of the absorb shield I put on them (I have a little white bar below the health bar to represent total absorbs) – on tanks it’s generally only about 10% of their health, but for others it’s rather larger, also depending on gear level (that is, stamina) too. Besides I also have Grid set to show tanks in their own virtual group (as well as their actual group) so it’s easy enough to know who’s going to require bigger heals to top their health off.

I think I’ll probably hide the deficit number from now on and see how it goes, since at best I ignore it anyway, and at worst it’s distracting.

    • January 8, 2014 1:01 pm

LOL, yeah sorry for the vague terms there, but I’m glad you know what I mean. That’s the problem with healing is that it’s so much muscle memory and instinct that after a while you need your addons to tell you a lot less than you probably did in the beginning.

Hi, thank you for sharing your UI, I really like it. I’m also a fairly new mistweaver and your blog is a pleasure to read.

I have one question about your UI, I tried your WeakAuras settings and the Expel Harm aura doesn’t work for some reason, I watched your video and there it works well. WeakAuras can import it correctly but the cooldown doesn’t work, all the other auras work perfectly. Do you have any idea what could cause this behaviour?

    • January 29, 2014 9:58 pm

Hmm. I haven’t run into any issues with this so far, nor have I heard it from anyone else who has done the imports. Is there any chance that you have Expel Harm glyphed and perhaps that is affecting the aura? I’ll try to do some troubleshooting with this asap and see if I can duplicate it.

Yes, it was exactly that! Without glyph it works perfectly.

The problem seemed to be the spell ID, had to write the glyphed expel harms spell ID (147489) to the spell name field and it works.

    • January 30, 2014 9:13 pm

Great, glad to hear you got it working. :)

I had the same issue with Expel Harm, maybe post and update in the post about this, it’s probably very helpful for others who come across the same problem. Very nice blog and post otherwise. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Tzufit,

Love your work! I absolutely love the clean simplicity of your UI. Reminds me of my iphone’s interface. All the other UI’s I’ve been looking at are just way too busy. Yours is perfect! I just downloaded kgpanels and i was wondering if u would share your kgpanel .lua file? I would truly be greatful! :)

I can’t seem to find the option you mentioned above that allows VuhDo to auto resize the panel bars depending on raid/group size. All I can seem to find is how to save different profiles for different groups.

Guys where i can download this addon pack?
